Nobody who grew up in the sixties didn’t know who Levon Helm was. He died yesterday in Woodstock, NY.

The Band of Heathens played in Helm’s home state of Arkansas last night, and when they heard he was gone they composed a song in a parking lot in Little Rock. Go here http://www.bandofheathens.com/free-stuff/ to download or stream “One More Song.”

Peace and good thoughts to all who ushered him on.

  1. You and I were just talking about Watkins Glen recently. I didn’t actually see the Band, but we could all hear them. It was heaven. When Danko and Garcia died in the 90’s, I remember thinking it was way too early for our generation to think about losing some of these guys. 15 years later, it still doesn’t seem right that they should go. They made themselves so much a part of our lives and memories with their music. All these guys were born about the same time and crashed into our consciousness about the same time. I suppose now they’ll begin leaving us about the same time, but I’ll never get used to it because their music feels like a part of me. All the more reason to be certain to turn another generation on to their genius. All we have to do is hear the opening bars, and they’re with us again. And I guess ol’ Levon can take a load off for good. That makes me happy even while I’m sad. Thanks for the tribute. I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

    • Makes you hope the cliched “Rock and roll heaven” really exists, doesn’t it?

      • I choose to believe it does. I need that to be true, for them and for me. If there’s no afterlife, I’m not making wise enough use of my time here. If there is an afterlife and there’s no rock n roll, it won’t be worth spending eternity. I’m serious about that. It’s a divine gift.
